Claire Dowley graduated in English and American Literature from The University of Warwick. She wandered around Europe for a few years working as a skiing instructor in the French Alps during the winter and sailing in the summer. Settling in London, she worked for a theatrical agent managing clients in the West End, Hollywood and on Broadway before training to become a teacher. Claire taught Literature in boarding schools in Australia for twenty-five years. Having retired from teaching, she has started to write.

Blackwood, her first novel, is a bit of a romp around life in a boarding school and was a finalist in the 2021 Claymore Awards and longlisted for the McKitterick Prize 2023.

Mud is a more literary novel which explores the nature of deceptive communication.
​
Claire is now working on Sand which will further explore how meaning and intent in how we communicate are slippery.
